North Korea Dance
Eun-Me Ahn
Creation 2018
About the show ///////////////////////////
Recently, the two Koreas have made a historical step on the path towards peace that could put an end to a 65 years old conflict. About North Korea, we know most of all its leader and its race to get nuclear weapon. But what about arts and dance in this country also know as "hermit country" ?
For this piece, Eun-Me Ahn dived into the videos coming from North : military parades and fan dances, gestures showing off virility and and virtuoso acrobatics, traditional dances and village dances. She makes the movements and the codes her own and cooks it her own adding her usual colorful and spicy twist and going from minimalistic to epic scenes, to explore differences and similarities between dance in the North and the South :
"We share the same roots, the same traditions. But because of History and the partition of Korea, things have evolved very differently on each side of the border.
All citizens are hoping for peace between the two countries. Maybe now is time to try to know each other a little better."
